Experimenter presents a group exhibition at India Art Fair Edi+ions Ahmedabad with works by Ayesha Sultana, Chanakya School, Kanishka Raja, Kaveri Raina, and Rathin Barman. At the crux of the exhibition lies the encounter between the warp and the weft, the fundamentals of weaving as a practice. It is through this systematic repetition of threads that patterns emerge as well as possibilities for departure, rupture, and fragmentation. Across the works presented, the tension between the warp and weft become anchors, exploring the relationship between control, departure and transformation.
Through deep engagement with diverse textile methodologies, women’s practices, and intergenerational knowledge systems, Chanakya School’s works explore the residues of the human hand imprinted on thread over time. Their textile sculpture Water Within acts as a holding form for the all-encompassing presence of water, which is amorphous and cannot be controlled.

Concurrently on view are Sultana’s new indigo works Drawings for an Unfixed Space, resembling a traditional weave with repeated geometric patterns. In her sculpture Instinct, Sultana presents a silver spider web that situates the small yet formidable figure of the spider as the architect of its own intricate network, embodying an unexpected capacity to construct and command.

Rathin Barman examines the nuances of the modern built environment as a tool for understanding sociopolitical history. The sculptures from the Space Count series reconstruct the once grand, colonial-era homes of North Kolkata from anecdotes and memories recounted by their current residents. In the series, fragments of these houses are reimagined as maps or plans, transforming them into ever-evolving architectural entities.
The exhibition reconfigures the notion of control as a condition that is continuously tested, acting as the starting point for resistance to unfold and take shape. The act of weaving, in which the warp and the weft depend upon one another, becomes a conduit across each of these works. Across this exhibition, the weave offers both a conceptual and material framework, bringing into focus possibilities of disruption, transformation, and regeneration that arise through the interplay between structure and variation.
