In The Shifting Terrain, Vinoja depicts the idea of a wounded landscape. These forests were sites of armed struggle during the civil war, where military personnel often wore clothing that camouflaged them within the terrain. The land, though seemingly lush, green, and serene at first glance, holds buried layers of violence and trauma. Vinoja also references the island’s geography—being mostly surrounded by water—which adds a further sense of isolation and concealment. Lines and sticks symbolize roots or hidden forces emerging from the earth, suggesting a “breathing land” that is alive and vigilant. For her, the landscape is both beautiful and scarred; its stillness evoking the long war and the suffering it has witnessed.
