Please apply with a short note of intent.
This module examines the relations between form and life that allow us to feel moved. Rather than a question of cultural capital, or a learnt response drawn from memory, we will consider the techniques of lived experience by which we receive, or fail to receive, the milieus within which we become ourselves. Through examples from Indian aesthetic theory, raag-based music and anthropological notions of human and non-human others, this module will think through how being moved is at once a political, emotional and existential act.
Ahona Palchoudhuri studies anthropology and ethnomusicology at Brown University. Her research looks at how ethics and aesthetics relate to one another. She focuses in particular on how the grammar of music participates in ecological change, erotic charge, ritual metaphysics and political aspiration; moving, as such, between religious and secular forms of life.
