Vinoja incorporates elements from these buildings along with colours from the surrounding landscape, reflecting how both architecture and nature shift over time. Many of these buildings, especially in the North and East of Sri Lanka bear visible scars of the civil war. Some were destroyed, others renovated, but many still carry bullet marks or structural damage.
These remnants serve as informal monuments, preserving collective memory. The architecture becomes a witness holding memories not just of destruction, but of survival. Homes, schools, and public spaces all reflect the wounded landscape, both physical and emotional. Through this work, she questions what defines a monument. Rather than grand statues, it’s often these ordinary, damaged buildings that truly preserve history— architecture itself becomes a monument to collective experience.
