Based on an advertising poster which also functioned as a board game, Edo-sugoroku bore images of shops and products and were distributed as prizes and became a part of people’s lives. Versions of this product are still available today, such as Sumida River’s Sakuramochi and Toshimaya’s Shirozake. Embroidered camellia and hibiscus flowers, in seven colours prescribed by various clothing edicts across regions of Datta’s research, feature in Poster 16.
