Mullivaikkal, where the final chapter of the Sri Lankan civil war came to a close, is situated in the Mullaittivu district of northern Sri Lanka. Mullivaikkal stands as a deeply evocative landscape of memory, encompassing both seaside lands (karaiyam) and farmland (vellam). These names refer to the working communities who lived and laboured there. During the conflict, over 25,000 bunkers were constructed by the local population. The seaside area included wells dug by residents, and the landscape was dotted with tents, ships, checkpoints, and temporary shelters.

Vinoja felt compelled to revisit these places, to see the landscape and imagine how it appeared before the war's devastation. On previous visits, she witnessed the profound scars of conflict and engaged with the community to ask questions, listening as they recalled their memories. This research remains ongoing, as she continues to explore and document how the war has reshaped both Mullivaikkal’s landscape and the lives of those who once called it home.
