Vinoja brings together fragmented landscapes and partial portraits to evoke the silent absence of those lost to war—those whose names were never spoken, whose stories were never told. Working with fabric sourced from various communities, she resists specificity; the stitched forms are neither fully landscape nor entirely figure, but a haunting convergence of both. The deliberate omission of facial detail echoes the dehumanization of victims rendered anonymous by violence. These are not portraits of particular individuals, but of collective memory and collective forgetting.
Through this work, Vinoja reflects on the poignancy and injustice of forced anonymity. She urges viewers to look beyond numbers and statistics—to remember the ordinary lives, the lost kin, and the unacknowledged martyrs—who deserve to be remembered.
