This module is a five-day interdisciplinary workshop – structured, intensive, yet exploratory and adventurous – on the various ways in which responding to the arts can lead to the examination and enrichment of life. It will use literature, fine arts, design, music, cinema and conversation to open up the ways in which we experience and produce the structures and content of our everyday lives of reflection, interaction, imagination, memory and productivity. The workshop will create a shared space of directed activities in which rigour and pleasure, difficulty and delight, precision and openness, would combine to sustain an atmosphere of humane possibilities, free of academic intimidation as well as professional competitiveness. It is designed for people from a wide range of professions who are dissatisfied with the manner in which living, working, learning and thinking end up being divided into different disciplines, systems, institutions and hierarchies. Upon confirmation, candidates are expected to attend the full session on all days of the selected module.

This ELP module will involve practical sessions with art writing in English, Bengali or Hindi.

Participants need to apply with a writing sample of approximately 350 words.

Participants will be reading key texts from all kinds of writing (literary, theoretical, philosophical, critical, art-historical journalistic and curatorial) to think about and work towards modes of writing in a complex, lucid, original and felicitous manner, avoiding jargon, clichés and obscurity as much as possible without letting go of nuance and complexity. Participants will also be looking at the limits of writing: how do we know when to stop and let the work speak for itself? Whom are we writing for? How do we prepare ourselves for writing about and with the arts, and how do we customize these preparations to the work of individual artists and their ways of working? These are some of the questions that are going to be explored, both practically and critically in this workshop.

Participants need to apply with a selection of 10-15 images.

This module explores how photographers conceptualize their work and also work with ideas and structures or forms in which these realized ideas may be put out in the world? How, and when, do photographers work with writers, or incorporate other media in their work? This is a practical as well as reflective workshop that looks at bodies of work made by the participants and studies the work of other well-established photographers. Participants will not be looking at all at the ‘taking’ of pictures at all, but all the intellectual, creative and intuitive work that needs to be done in photography after the photographs have been taken and made.
